Let's talk about the Republic of Belarus. What attracts tourists to our Motherland?

Our Motherland is situated in the center of Europe. So every year Belarus is visited by millions of tourists. Tourists from different countries in greater numbers after more hostels opened up in Belarus.  Some foreigners come to Belarus to visit their relatives or friends, others come just for sightseeing. They travel around Belarus to see the castles, small towns and settlements. They enjoy its beautiful landscape: Belarus is a land of vast plains and picturesque hills, thick forests and green meadows, deep blue lakes and flowing rivers. A major attraction in Belarus is its national parks, with Bereza State wildlife reserve, Belovezhskaya Puscha national park, Braslav Lakes, and Pripyatskiy national park attracting tens of thousands of visitors a year.

Our country has a lot of other attractions, including ancient cities, medieval castles, art galleries and museums. The country is well known for its crafts: Belarusian souvenirs made of linen and straw are popular with visitors. Our nearest neighbours Russians like to stay in local resorts or target hunting tours.

Minsk is a developing city break destination with increasing numbers of international airlines, including Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, opening routes to the city, and direct flights available from all the major European capitals. Tourists also travel to other parts of the country, in particular the city of Brest, near the Polish border, and Vitebsk, once home to painter Marc Chagall and host to the annual Slavonic Bazaar, a festival of central and eastern European culture. Russians like to stay in local resorts and to visit castles and cities.

A priority for Belarus is the development of ‘agritourism’, offering visitors the chance to live on traditional homesteads and learn about local culture and traditions while exploring the countryside.  Many of these farms are based around national parks and are increasingly popular with visitors keen to learn more about the traditional lifestyles of the region. Some farms specialise in teaching visitors about particular aspects of farming – one homestead, for example, in the south west of the country has a museum devoted to bee-keeping. Almost all offer horse-riding, walks and bicycle tours of the local countryside.

Are the official and non-official state symbols of Belarus known to foreigners? Why or why not?

I should say that there are official and non –official symbols of my country. The national flag of Belarus, the National Emblem and the National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus are official symbols of Belarus. The official symbols glorify the country’s past and speak about its present. I think that they are known to foreigners thanks to achievements in science and technology, glorious victories of our sportsmen at different competitions. The most widely known non-official symbols are the bison, the stork and the cornflower. They symbolize the beauty of our nature. I think that many foreigners know them too, as during their stay in our country they visit famous museums and our national parks and listen to gripping stories about Belarusian culture and nature.

What questions will you ask a journalist from the BELTA News Agency?

Which of the historic places in Belarus are worth visiting?

What is the most beautiful city in Belarus?

What possibilities for entertainment does your country offer to young people?

I wonder what souvenirs I should buy in your country.

Who are the most famous persons in your country?

What Belarusian festivals can you advise a foreigner to take part in?

I would advise him to visit Belarusian Festival of Straw and try making a straw item with his own hands, for example, a straw horse or a spider or any beautiful object of everyday life. If he comes to Belarus in June he should definitely visit Slavyansky Bazaar – International Art Festival- which takes place in Vitebsk. It’s a great opportunity to meet Belarusian, Russian or European celebrities, as well as to enjoy the best pieces of music, the fair of art and handicrafts “The City of Masters”, picturesque sights of Vitebsk. A Belarusian knights festival is a must to visit. The main medieval festivals and knights tournaments in Belarus are held in Novogrudok,  Zaslavl, Nesvizh, and Mir. He’ll meet young girls and men in medieval costumes and watch knights tournaments.
