II. Read the article and be ready to discuss some problems after it:

TOPICS

Text 1. About Myself

I. Read the text and get the main idea of it. Напишите текст о себе на основе этого текста (для проверки).

From the very start I should say that it is not an easy thing to speak about myself as it is hard to have a look at yourself from aside, but at the same time who knows you better than you yourself do?

Let me introduce myself. My name is… My surname is… I am …years old. I am … (describe your appearance). I think that I'm even tempered, rather reserved, calm and modest. But sometimes I can lose my temper and become either angry or sad. I like staying alone and sometimes I retreat into my shell. But at the same time I like my friends, I like to laugh and joke. I have got a sense of humour. It means I understand humour and appreciate it.

There are many things in our life I like and some I dislike. I like when everything is OK. Being happy is one way of being wise. I like to study because knowledge is useful sometimes. I'm fond of reading as it gives not only knowledge, but also wonderful moments of joy and pleasure. (tell us what else you like and dislike).

I was born on the …th (date) of ..(month) 19..(year) in the town of … where I live now together with my parents and my younger sister. My early years, which I remember badly, were typical of a child living in a town. I was born into a family of a teacher and a doctor… (tell us about your family, father, mother)

I should say that it was my lucky chance to study for 11 years at my school. It turned out to be the best school in our town. School for me was not only lessons. I had a lot of friends there. We organized extra class activities such as parties and other social activities. I actively participated in most of them.

I am sociable, so I have got a lot of friends now. As for me, I appreciate people's honesty, kindness, sense of justice and intelligence. I don't like when people are rude and aggressive.

I am stubborn at times. But to my mind being persistent is not always a bad thing. That means if I have an aim I never leave things half done. At times I feel dissatisfied with myself, especially when I fail to do something or can't do things the way they should be done. At the same time I think I am hard-working and diligent

I asked myself a lot of times what I wanted to be when I left school. A few years ago it was difficult to give a definite answer. As years passed I changed my mind several times. But it was only recently that I finally made up my mind what profession I would most like to have in the future. I realized that my strongest desire was to help people and children with speech problems. I hope my dream will come true. This year I entered the University.

And now a few words about my inclinations. I haven't got any special hobby, like collecting something, but I'm fond of reading books. They give me more knowledge of their people's lives and feelings and broaden my outlook. In my opinion, books are a source of emotional inspiration and romantic feeling. Besides, books help me to continue my own education. The time spent on a good book is never wasted. Reading is a rewarding pastime. (tell us what else you like to do).

Whenever I have some time to spare, I go to the theatre. I'm not keen on television.Sometimes I play different sport games for health and pleasure. I usually play such games as volleyball, basketball, tennis, and sometimes football.

(If you have your own family, tell us about your husband, children)

And finally, the things I hope to achieve in my life are: to have a successful career, to have the house of my dreams and to be with someone in my life to share all that with.

II. Be ready to answer the questions:

1. What traits of character do you have?

2. How can they help in your life?

3. What do you do in your spare time?

4. Is it important to have a good family? Why?

5. What can children bring to our lives?

Text 2. A Speech Therapist

I. Before reading the text give us your meaning on the following questions:

1. Are you going to be a speech therapist?

2. If you`ve been working already for some time, share us your impressions. Is it a difficult work? Why or why not?

II. Read the article and be ready to discuss some problems after it:

In order to get the idea who a speech therapist is, let us know about a speech therapy. A speech therapy is therapeutic treatment used to correct defects in speaking. Such defects may originate in the brain, in the ear (deafness), or anywhere along the vocal tract and may affect the voice, articulation, language development, or ability to speak after language is learned. Therapy begins with diagnosis of underlying physical, physiological, or emotional dysfunction. It may involve training in breathing, use of the voice, and speaking habits. Some abnormalities that cause speech disorders (e.g., cleft palate, stroke) can be corrected to various degrees before a speech therapist’s work begins.

A speech therapist is a specialist with training in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of speech, voice, and language disorders who works with people, unable to make speech sounds or cannot make them clearly. They also work with people who stutter, have fluency and rhythm problems, inappropriate pitch, or harsh voice and speech quality problems.

The most widespread and obvious speech disorder is stuttering, often caused by anxiety. The speech therapist sets up a program of speech exercises to reduce the disability, and if necessary, enlists the aid of a psychologist or psychiatrist. Other disorders may result from hearing loss, stroke, cerebral palsy, mental disability, or brain injury. Speech therapists keep careful records on the evaluation and progress of patients, often developing and implementing individualized treatment programs based on the input of physicians, psychiatric social workers, and psychologists. In fact, because speech disorders are usually related to neurological, psychological, and physical conditions, speech therapists must be able to work as a member of a team which may include other healthcare specialists such as a neurologist and psychiatrist.

An important part of a speech therapist's work is the counseling and support of individuals and families on speech disorders and on how to cope with the stress associated with these problems. Therapists also work with families on treatment techniques to use at home and on how to modify behavior that impedes communication. Although a speech therapist's job is not physically demanding, it does require patience and compassion, as progress may be slow and halting.

Speech therapy is a painstaking process, but it can be as rewarding as it is frustrating. Tremendous attention to detail and sharp focus are necessary in the evaluation of the patient's progress. Overall, speech therapists must be able to understand and empathize with the emotional strains and stresses that such problems bring, both from the patient's and family member's point of view.

Speech therapists, like other health care professionals, must carefully diagnose problems and if necessary call upon the advice of other health specialists. The ability to distinguish the need for the professional input of specialists is critical to the therapist's success. Therapists must also monitor the progress of patients, eliminate certain programs, and introduce others that are more effective.

The ability to make informed decisions that may define the success and failure of any individual program is a skill that can only come with years of experience.

III. Think over thequestions:

1. What is a speech therapy?

2. Who is a speech therapist?

3. What people does a speech therapist work with?

4. What problems can a speech therapist help in?

5. Why can this work be as rewarding as it is frustrating?

6. Is it a popular job?
