What is the context of the Sword Verse?

Sword Verse, Q.9.5 (sura 9, ayat – or verse – 5), which reads as follows

“And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush.”

The Sword Verse is quite in keeping with the warlike spirit of Islam and the Qur’an. ‘It’s general message is: convert people to Islam by force and if they do not accept, kill them and hunt them down.’ They then point to all the violent Islamic movements in the world today.

This verse was revealed after Muhammad's and the Muslims' return to Mecca. This Sword verse came as an announcement to potential enemies that although the Muslims had won the sacred city of Mecca for themselves, they were not going to tolerate attacks from those Arab tribes who wanted to continue the original Quraysh campaign against the Muslims.

The context of the Sword Verse does not preach baseless aggressive war for the purpose of Islamic conversion. The exhortation to fight the remaining polytheists is still a case of defensive war; at most, one might say that its underlying rationale is, "attack is the best form of defense".

In what way does Islam resemble Christianity, in what way is it different?

Similarities:

- They both place emphasis on prayer and communication with God

- both call on people to be kind and generous

-  both counsel treating others the way you would expect to be treated.

-   both religions respect and love Jesus and expect him to return to earth as part of their end of days narratives.

- One God

- Holy text (Bible and Qur’an)

- Approve of Jesus

- Mary as Theotokos, this term is used mostly in Christianity (virgin birth)

- Predestination (everything is already

- No pagans

- Existence of heaven, hell and earthly city

Differences:

- Trinity in Christianity, Monotheism in Islam

- In Christianity Jesus is son of God, in Islam Jesus is prophet of God (Allah)

- In Christianity mankind is evil, original sin. In Islam humans are born pure and innocent.

- Different qualities of God. For example, in Christianity cunning cannot be applied to God. Also, in Christianity God brings only good, but in Islam Allah can be the source of bad.

- In Islam Qur’an is the “word of God”, while in Christianity Bible is the record of relationship between God and humans.
