Education by Correrspondence

       1. Alexander Petrov is an experienced worker. He works at the laboratory of a Research Institute in Moscow. His group designs electrical equipment for fully automatic shops and plants. Still he wants to improve his technical knowledge. That’s why he became a student of the Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Automation.

       2. Alexander Petrov is in his last year now. In autumn he will graduate from the Institute. He will become a specialist in the field of automation and cybernetics. He carries out a large number of experiments at the laboratory and gets numerous consultations from professors and teachers of the Correspondence Institute.

       3. There is a wide system of correspondence courses in Russia. A large number of workers and employees combine work with study by correspondence at higher or specialized secondary schools.

       4. There are Correspondence Institutes in many regional centres and other big cities and towns.

       5. The examination session lasting for two weeks takes place twice a year. During this period students attend lectures on the main subjects, take their exams. They listen to lectures on the subjects of the next academic year. Annually a great number of students graduate from Correspondence Institutes and become highly - qualified specialists.

At the Institute

       1. Victor Pavlov is a first- year student. He studies at the Polytechnical Institute. First - year students study mathematics, physics, chemistry, elements of machines, a foreign language and a number of other compulsory subjects.

       2. On his working days Victor gets up very early. He lives alone now as his parents work in the Far North and will come back only next summer. After breakfast Victor goes to the Institute by metro. It takes him half an hour to get to the Institute. As a rule the lectures begin at 9 o’clock. Every day he has three lectures or seminars on different subjects.There is a lunch hour after the second class.

       3. Victor Pavlov’s Institute is very large. The student body is about 12.000. The building of the Institute houses not only lecture-halls but also laboratories and workshops. The Institute has seventeen faculties on different specialities: metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, electronics, power plant construction, radio engineering, etc.

       4. The academic year begins in September. It lasts ten months and ends in June. There are two terms in the course of the academic year. So students take their exams twice a year. During the terms students attend lectures, carry out laboratory tests and do practical work. The course of studies is four years.

       5. From the very first many students start independent work in students’ scientific societies. They make a deep investigation of the problems they study, do collective research, and develop instruments and apparatus.

She will be a Lawyer

       1. Nina Komova is a friend of mine. We work together at the same research laboratory. She is twenty. Nina is very active: she goes in for skiing, she attends a ball-room dancing group and her hobby is knitting. But there is no time to relax: Nina works and studies.

       2. Nina gets up early in the morning. After breakfast she goes to work. She lives far from the plant, so she goes there by tram or by bus. It takes her half an hour. She works till five o’clock.

       3. After work she goes home. She rests a little and then she studies. She is a first-year student of the All-Union Correspondence Law Institute.

       4. It is very interesting to study at this Institute. The students learn the subjects they will need in their future work. They take History of State and Law, Criminal Law, Civil and Financial Law and foreign languages as well. Nina likes to go to the laboratory of foreign languages. Students use computers for their independent work.

       5. Nina is a hard-working student. She does her best. When she graduates from the Institute she will become a qualified specialist.

Chemical-Technological Institute named after D.I.Mendeleyev

1. The Chemical-Technological Institute was founded in 1920 and since that time has grown into a big famous Institute.

 2 Every year hundreds of young engineers graduate from the Institute and go to different cities and towns. They work at plants and research centres. They carry on research work at the Research Institutes. They create new types of materials, work out new methods of production and investigate different substances.

3 Many famous chemists in all fields of chemistry have graduated from this Institute. The student body is about 7.000, among them full-time students as well as part-time students. The academic year lasts from September till June. First and second year students study fundamental subjects such as mathematics, structure of matter, general chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, philosophy, a foreign language and some others. Beginning with the third year it is a wide range of specialized courses.

       4 In December students take their exams and then they have vacations. Besides lectures and practical lessons students work in the laboratories. There are some well-equipped modern labs where students carry out experiments and do research work. There is a good library and reading-rooms at the Institute. The library occupies the whole storey and contains a great number of books.

       5 Sports and games are very popular with students. A lot of them go in for sports, especially swimming.
