THE COCA-COLA COMPANY

A short overview. Atlanta-based Coca-Cola is the world's largest soft drink producer. The Coke and Coca-Cola trademarks are the world's best known. One of the South's great enterprises, Coke has also emerged as one of America's most global marketers. Despite aggressive advertising by Pepsi, Coke has maintained and expanded market share. Although the mature US market consumes 292 servings per person per year and the over-seas market only 59, the overseas average is rising rapidly. Foreign operations currently generate 60 % of sales and 80 % of profits. Coke's market share of the global soft drink business is now 44 %.

Coca-Cola uses a franchise system for distribution, with local bottlers purchasing syrup or concentrate from Coke. The largest US bottler is a $4 billion public company, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coke is also a leading citrus products maker (Minute Maid). Coke and Nestle are jointly marketing canned coffee in Korea.

Coca-Cola has a long record of profitable growth and financial strength.

A bit of history. Atlanta pharmacist John S. Pemberton invented Coke in 1886. His bookkeeper Frank Robinson named the product after 2 ingredients, kola nuts and coca leaves (later cleaned of narcotics), and wrote the name in the now-familiar script. By 1891 Atlanta druggist Asa Candler had bought the company for $2,300. By 1895 the soda fountain drink was available in all states, entering Canada and Mexico by 1898.

Candler sold most US bottling rights in 1899 to Benjamin Thomas and John Whitehead of Chattanooga for $1.00. With the backing of John Lupton, these men developed the regional franchise bottling system, creating over 1,000 bottlers within 20 years. The bottlers used the contoured bottle designed by the C. J. Root Glass Company (Terre Haute, Indiana) in 1916.

In 1916 Candler retired to become Atlanta's mayor; his family sold the company to Atlanta banker Ernest Woodruff for $25 million in 1919, the same year Coca-Cola went public. In 1923 Woodruff appointed his son Robert president. Robert continued as chairman until 1942 and remained influential until his death.

Robert Woodruffs contributions were in advertising and overseas expansion. He introduced "The Pause that Refreshes" (1929) and "It's the Real Thing" (1941), adding to the government assistance Coca-Cola built 64 overseas bottling plants during WWII. Also during this period (1941) the company accepted "Coke" as an official name.

Coca-Cola bought Minute Maid in 1960 and introduced Sprite (now the world's #1 lemon-lime soft drink) in 1961, and Diet Coke in 1982. New Coke, introduced in 1985, was widely rejected, and the original formula soon returned as Coca-Cola Classic.

In 1986 the company consolidated the US bottling operations it owned into Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) and sold 51 % of the new company, the largest US soft drink bottler, to the public. US price wars have led to weak earnings for CCE, which in 1991 announced plans to buy #2 bottler Johnston Coca-Cola. The 2 bottlers produce 55 % of US Coke.

Today. Soft drinks products are sold in over 160 countries all over the world; syrup and/or concentrates are made at 44 plants worldwide.
