MOSCOW UNIVERSITY, ITS PAST AND PRESENT (PART II)

The University grew and the so-called “new” building was erected in the XIX century. It stands next to the older building but on the opposite side of Herzen street. The new building was constructed by architect Tyurin in 1836 and в monument to Mikhail Lomonosov, the founder of the University, was placed in front of it.

The other buildings of the University went up behind the first two. However, they, too, proved inadequate to house the ra­pidly growing faculties. Therefore, the main building, 36-stories high, and the complex of buildings for natural sciences faculties, students’ hostels and teachers’ flats were all built in Lenin Hills in the early 1950’s.

The main University building is unique and of special inte­rest. The departments and faculties, libraries, assembly halls, museums are all located in the central tall structure. The teachers’ apartments and students’ rooms are in the wings.

The University campus is a large students’ town in itself with its own shops, all kinds of services, several gymnasia and swimming facilities.

 

 

Text 2: Volgograd State Pedagogical University

Volgograd State Pedagogical University is one of the most popular educational establishments in our country. It was founded in 1931 as a Pedagogical Higher school. Since that time it has prepared thousands of teachers and has become one of the greatest scientific centres of methodical and pedagogical activi­ties in our country.

For the great contribution to the field of education the Institute was awarded the orders and in 1992 got the status of the Pedagogical University.

The University consists of many faculties. Some of them train teachers not in one but in two subjects such as mathematics and physics, biology and chemistry, geography and biology, Russian and literature etc. Graduates receive diplomas and can teach either one or two subjects in a secondary school.

The Students of the University have every opportunity for work and rest: modern laboratories, lecture-rooms, libraries, reading-halls, and hostels. There is also a students’ research society at the University, where the students can develop their creative thinking and are able to do their scientific work.

Volgograd State Pedagogical University has an efficient teaching staff. Among them there are Academicians, Doctors of Science, Candidates of Science. Only within the recent years hundreds of monographs, textbooks and academic works have been published by the scientists of the University. The results of research are used in the teaching process.

Volgograd State Pedagogical University is well-known not only in Russia, but in other countries as well. Many students from different countries study here.

ЛОНДОНСКИЙ УНИВЕРСИТЕТ

Лондонский университет, старейший колледж которого Юниверсити-колледж, был основан в 1823 году, состоит сегодня из 15 колледжей, 15 медицинских факультетов и 15 институтов. 42 000 студентов дневных отделений Лондонского университета могут составить населе­ние небольшого городка. Студенты заочного отделения, которые зани­маются в своё свободное время, составляют 22 000 человек. Таким образом, Лондонский университет - самое крупное учебное заведение страны. Наиболее важным отделением Лондонского университета являет­ся педагогический институт. В нём учатся - 2 600 студентов днев­ного и заочного отделения. Примерно 40% студентов получают госу­дарственные стипендии. Институт является также научным центром по целому ряду специализированных дисциплин. В научных исследованиях педагогического института принимают участие многие факультеты университета. Главная часть системы обучения основывается на заочном обучении. Студенты-заочники имеют возможность получить высшее об­разование в любом из колледжей института. По окончании курса учёбы они обязаны сдать экзамен или написать дипломную работу.
