Life in the City and in the Country

I live in the town of Gantsevichi.

My home town is nice and quiet.

Its population is about 14,000 people.

There are about fifty historical monuments of archaeology and architecture in the Gantsevichi district.

But I’d like to live in a big city because there are more opportunities to find a good job.

There are lots of restaurants, cafes and disco bars.

You can go to concerts, museums, a football or hockey match with your friends.

I live a nice flat in a new block of flats.

Our flat is on the second floor.

It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water.

There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat.

The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat.

Near the window there is a little table and a TV set.

Opposite the TV set there is a sofa and two cosy armchairs.

There is also a small table for newspapers and magazines.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room.

In this room there are two beds with a bedside table.

The third room is my study.

It is not large but very cosy.

It has a writing-table, a chair and a bookcase.

But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen where the whole family gathers together at one table.

I like the English proverb: "My home is my castle" because my flat is, indeed, my castle.

I like my flat very much.

Means of Communication

Communication is sending and receiving of spoken or written messages between people and places.

Letters are the most common means of communication.

Other means are telegram, telephone, telex, fax, e-mail, radio, television, newspapers, etc.

Telephone is the fastest means of communication.

Nowadays telephone facilities are available in all cities, towns and most of the villages.

We can also send messages by e-mail and the Internet to any part of the world on the computers.

The letter, telephone and e-mail are personal means of communication.

They are used as means of communication between individuals.

When we have to communicate with a big group of people, we have to use means of mass communication such as

newspapers, radio, television and others.

A newspaper gives opinions, information and news of interest from every corner of the world.

Nowadays people spend a lot of time on social-networking sites like Facebook, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and others.

One of the most popular programs for communicating with people over the internet is Skype.

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet.

It was founded in 2003 and has more than 600 million users.

Every means of communication is useful in its own way.

Together they help us keep in touch with our friends, relatives and the world.

School

All children at the age of six go to school.

Schooling is free, universal and compulsory.

Children leave school at the age of 17.

Our school is situated in Parkovaya Street.

It’s not a large school.

About 450 pupils attend it.

Our school is 47 years old.

It’s a three-storeyed building.

The classrooms are large and light.

A school year is 9 months long and it’s full of events.

Many of them became traditions because they happen every year on the same dates.

Some traditions are similar in all Belarusian schools, some are unique.

The school year starts on the 1st of September.

This day is special for schoolchildren, teachers and parents.

On the 1st of September all schools celebrate the Day of Knowledge.

We also celebrate other traditions such as the New Year Ball, Teacher’s Day, school Olympiads, Health Day,

school reunion, the Last Bell, Graduation Day and others.

I like my school very much.

Sport in Our Life

People all over the world are fond of sports and games.

Regular exercises make you feel and look better.

Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit and more organized.

It unites people of different classes and nationalities.

Many people go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, football, bodybuilding...

All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks...

Sport is paid much attention to in schools and kindergartens.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our country.

The most popular are football, hockey, gymnastics and tennis.

As for me, I go in for table tennis (ping-pong).

I have been playing tennis for five years.

The more I play, the more I like it.

I often take part in different competitions or simply play with my friends.

My favourite players are Pete Sampras, Maria Sharapova , Victoria Azarenko and Maxim Mirny.

I do my training with great pleasure.

I hope to play as well as the best players do.

Travelling/Holidays

Modern life is impossible without travelling.

Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure.

They can travel by air, by rail, by sea or by road.

Travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive.

Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but you can see many interesting places.

Travelling by sea is also very popular.

As for me, I prefer travelling by car.

Every summer my family and I go on vacation to the South .

Usually we go to the seaside for a few days and rent a room.

We play volleyball, tennis, swim in the sea and sunbathe.

In the evening I like to sit on the beach enjoying the sunset.

I want to see different kinds of trees, flowers and plants.

I always take a camera with me.

I take photos of everything that interests me: the sights of a city, mountains, lakes, the ruins of ancient buildings.

We return home sunburnt and full of impressions.

I like travelling very much.

Types of houses

There are different types of houses such as cottages, detached and semi-detached houses, terraced houses, bungalows,

mansions, maisonettes and others.

The most popular types of houses in the UK are semi-detached houses and terraced houses.

In Belarus people prefer blocks of flats and detached houses.

As for me, I live in a flat.

Our flat is on the second floor.

It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water.

There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat.

Weather and climate

The weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.

Climate is the weather a certain place has over a long period of time.

Climate has a very important influence on plants, animals and humans.

It is different in different parts of the world.

Belarus has a temperate-continental climate with hot summers and long, cold winters.

Belarus weather in spring and autumn is usually cool and it can often be damp and rainy.

If you compare Belarus winter and summer temperatures at the beginning of our century and at its end you’ll see that

climate has really changed.

Some scientists think that the world is becoming hotter because of the greenhouse effect.

During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide.

This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a greenhouse.

It lets heat get in, but it doesn't let much heat get out.

So the atmosphere becomes warmer.

These changes can be dangerous for our planet.

Earth is millions of years old, much older than the humans.

We know many of its secrets.

Yet there is still much to learn.

My Future Profession

1)       Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life for millions of school leavers.

2)       Many roads are opened before them: vocational and technical schools, universities…

3)       But it’s not an easy thing to choose a profession.

4)       Some pupils follow the advice of their parents, others can't decide even after leaving school.

5)       While choosing a job many factors should be taken into consideration: wages and salaries, job satisfaction,

opportunities to travel and others.

6)       As for me, I made my choice long ago.

I want to be a doctor.

It is an interesting profession.

I understand that it’s necessary to study a lot to become a doctor.

This profession requires great responsibility because it deals with health.

He is always kind and attentive to his patients.

They feel it and believe him, and it makes his work easier.

He is happy when his patient is recovered.

I want to be a businessman.

I think our country needs good business people to strengthen its economy.

After I finish school I'm going to enter the university and study marketing or management.

Милиционер

Militiamen do a very important job because they make the community a safer place.

Being a militiaman is very hard work.

You have to go through training first so you have to be fit and healthy.

A militiaman catches criminals and people who are breaking the law.

They arrest drug dealers so that children don’t pick up this bad habit.

If you go too fast, he will have to pull you over for speeding.

Although a militiaman carries a gun he doesn’t just shoot the criminal.

The gun is for protection.

A militiaman uses handcuffs so that the criminal does not attack him or run away.

To serve and protect is their main task.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Инженер

I want to be an engineer.

Engineers solve problems.

They work in teams to find better ways of doing things, and they design better solutions.

Each solution requires creativity, teamwork, and technical skill.

Engineers open doors so that we are capable of doing more as a society.

They are problem-solvers who put scientific knowledge to practical use.

«The story of civilization is, in a sense, the story of engineering – that long and difficult struggle to make the forces of nature work for man’s good».

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Учитель

I want to become a teacher.

My favourite subject is …………..

I know that it’s not easy and takes much patience and effort.

A teacher has to know how to teach, how to make difficult things understandable.

He knows how to get students interested in the subject.

A teacher should have perfect knowledge of his subject.

I think the ideal teacher is the one who can combine all these qualities.

He must be a great specialist and also a nice personality.

I hope in future I will become a really good teacher.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Геолог

I believe that the first scientists were geologists.

They observed earth processes all around them.

I like complex puzzles … when you are given a series of clues on the surface of the earth.

Geologists are trying to solve the mystery of earth processes.

They learn how our landscape came to its present condition.

They deal with mountain building, erosion, earthquakes, volcanoes, oceans, rivers, glaciers, landslides …

Geology determines where and how we live.

It influences climate and controls life.

Dinosaurs, sea monsters, weird plants and animals, what happened to all those species that came before us?

I’m interested in all these things.
