TATARSTAN
1. The Republic of Tatarstan is located on the East-European plain where Europe meets Asia and two large rivers- the Volga and the Kama-carry their joint waters to the Caspian Sea.

2. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Tatars held the leading positions among the peoples of Russia as per the level of enlightenment, publishing business, development of literature and arts, national theatres and press.
3. Tatarstan has been developing as a multinational republic. The population of the republic is 3.7 million. The total number of the Tatars is nearly 7 million, including more than 5.5 million living in the Russian Federation.
4. Today the republic is a member of international organization for preservation of monuments of history and culture. The National Library ofthe Republic of Tatarstan is one of the biggest information centers of the country, its 1655 state, mass and universal libraries have a total stock of 25 million units on store consisting of print and audio-visual materials.
5.The Republic has 12 state theatres that stage some 60 new performances per year, the State Grand Concert Hall, Kasan State Circus, Tatar State Philharmonic Society. More than 2000 state-owned club institutions can simultaneously seat over 500 000 visitors.
6. All in all, 12519 people play ice hockey in Tatarstan. It is more popular in Kazan, Almetyevsk, Nizhnekamsk and Leninogorsk. Nevertheless , football remains the most popular sport in the republic. The strongest team of masters is « Rubin» plays in the first and the second league of the National Championship.
7. The oil field of Tatarstan with the total area exceeding 30,000sq.km. are located in the territory of 21 administrative districts of the republic. The republic also produces 1 billion cu. m of gas. There are 92 coal deposits in the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan that have industrial potential.
