Germans are known for “ordnung” (order), and Russians for besporyadok (disorder). As the Marquis de Custine saw it in 1839, “Every thing is here done by fits and starts, or with exceptions - a capricious system, which too often accords with the irregulated minds of the people...” Eighty-five years later, Lenin expressed a similar view: “ It is simply the usual Russian intellectual inability to do practical things - inefficiency and laziness. First they hung around, do something, and then think about it, and when nothing comes of it, they run to complain...” Each year about 30 percent of the vegetable crop spoils and does not reach the market. In 1990 forty million tons of grain were lost at harvest time. Approximately equal to the amount of grain Russia had to import from the West in that year. Plans in industry are fulfilled without regard to cost or quality control. Waste is widespread. Grandiose projects are begun and left unfinished. Wherever people get together, there is an atmosphere of chaos.

Contradiction is... the essence of Russia. Long laziness and sudden fits of energy, exaggerated cruelty and exaggerated kindness, wealth and squalor, violent xenophobia and uncontrollable yearning for contact with the foreign world, simultaneous love and hate for the same objects... Russians have a reputation for extremes. When emotions are displayed, they are spontaneous and strong. Russian hospitality can be overwhelming, friendship all encompassing, compassion deep, loyalty long lasting, drinking heavy, celebrations bo isterous, obsession with security paranoid. With Russians, it is often all or nothing. Halfway measures are simply not sufficient. Russian extremes and contradictions have been also described by Yevgeny Yevtushenko: “I'm thus and not thus. I am industrious and lazy, determined and shiftless. I am... shy and impudent, in me is a mixture of everything from the west to the east...”
Big is beautiful! “Sire, every thing is done on a large scale in this country - every thing is colossal”. So spoke Marquis de Custine, addressing Tsar Nickolas in Petersburg in 1839. Soviet leaders continued this “colossalism”. The Palace of Soviets, a Stalin project of the 1930s. was to have been the tallest building in the world.-, dwarfing the Empire State building and the Eiffel Tower.

Russians are impressed with size and numbers, and much that they do is on a grand scale. This is not unusual for such a big country. Russians think and act big, and they do not do things in half-hearted way. Unfortunately, Russia's grandiose plans are very often not realized. The Tsar Bell was too heavy and was neither hung nor rang. The Tsar Cannon was too big to fire.

Девушка остановилась и посмотрела на Майкла своими темными сияющими глазами. Майкл поздоровался с девушкой и спросил, не она ли его новая соседка. Девушка кивнула. Майкл представился и поинтересовался, как зовут девушку, сколько ей лет и почему она так поздно ходит по городу одна. Девушка помолчала, как - будто обдумывая ответ, затем сказала, что ее зовут Кейт, что ей восемнадцать лет. Она объяснила Майклу, что ей нравятся теплые тихие вечера, что она любит запах цветущих абрикосов и обожает встречать рассвет. Майкл улыбнулся и предложил проводить девушку до дома. Остаток пути они прошли молча. Когда они подошли к дому, в окнах горел свет. Девушка пояснила, что это ее родители пригласили друзей, и они, возможно, сидят в гостиной, беседуют и слушают музыку,. Кейт поблагодарила Майкла и скрылась за дверью, пожелав спокойной ночи. Майкл пошел домой, размышляя над странной встречей в эту странную ночь.

... Я очень люблю своих родителей и не хочу их расстраивать, но иногда я просто не могу понять их и те ссоры, которые вспыхивают без причины.
Например, вчера, когда они пришли с работы, они даже не поздоровались. Они только вошли в дом и тут же велели мне выключить стерео систему. Затем мама прямо ворвалась в мою комнату и сказала, чтобы я поднял с пола фантики от конфет и выбросил пустые баночки из-под Колы. Когда я вошел на кухню, отец был уже там. Он сердито прошептал, что я должен помыть посуду, пока мама не увидела ее в раковине. Он не успел договорить, что я должен сделать, из моей комнаты раздался мамин крик. Она велела мне вернуться и убраться там.
Я знаю все свои обязанности, но иногда я просто забываю вовремя выполнять их. Мои родители думают, что я ленивый и безответственный, но я не такой! Они всегда кричат на меня, и не слушают моих объяснений. Я больше так не могу.
Мне очень нужна ваша помощь. Посоветуйте, как мне себя вести, чтобы избегать этих конфликтов?

Следует сказать, что изучение природы и космоса наиболее популярны среди наших
слушателей. Особый интерес вызывает астрономия. Каждый день мы получаем несколько
сотен электронных писем. Ребята хотят знать, как началась жизнь на земле и почему она не
зародилась на Марсе или на Венере. Больше всего их интересует вопрос о том, одни ли мы во
Вселенной. Слушатели спрашивают, что такое звезды, и как они рождаются. Они так же хотят
знать, как далеко находится самая близкая к нам звезда, и может ли человек достичь ее.
Раньше часто спрашивали, сколько звезд на ночном небе, а сейчас многие интересуются
гороскопами, и поэтому задают много вопросов о созвездиях. Например, одна девочка
спросила, существуют ли созвездия на самом деле, или это изобретение человека.
Мне нравится моя работа. Отвечая на вопросы наших слушателей, мы сами узнаем
больше. Но мне интересно, сможем ли мы когда-нибудь ответить на все эти вопросы, v
