SAWS FOR LOGGING OPERATIONS
The following types of saws may be of use in logging operations: chain saws, circular saws anil drag saws.
Chain saws: It is the most popular type of felling equipment with which skilled labour produces more than 5 times that of the manual labour. There are different makes of power saws not only in gasoline power saws but in the electric and air powered saws. Types of powered saws are: gasoline motor driven circular saw with a «multi» «V» drive mounted on wheels; the gasoline motor driven cross-cut saw with a reciprocating driver; the pasoline motor powered chain-saw with a direct drive through a clutch.

Preference for one particular make of machine is on the whole a matter of opinion and operating experience. This is a choice for the man who has to operate or maintain the machine.
Circular saws: It is considered of most practical use as a mobile saw in a light stand of small timber - up to 12 inches in diameter - but it is often used as a semistationary saw at a landing, log pond or small mill. It is not considered suitable for cutting heavy large diameter logs and wsed as a mobile unit the forest floor must be clean.
Drag saws: This machine is not considered suitable for felling-but may be of use for bucking at the landings. One of the main advantages of this type of machine is that it feeds itself into the cut and therefore once it has been set up, the crew can leave it and carry out other work such as limbing in the near vicinity. In the United States it is used to a small degree for felling large trees, i.e., redwoods on the West Coast.

TRAVELLING KNOTTING MACHINE «ЛП-15»
This machine is designed for cutting off mechanically knots boughs and branches from hardwood and softwood trees at foiling sites and dumps.
The machine is mounted upon the TB-1 tractor and comprises a metal girder with cutterhead and trolley for gripping and pulling trees, and a special contrivance, which moves the girder transversely, when taking trees from a storage pile.
Applying the manipulator, the operator loads trees, by pieces, into the cutterhead and in the gripping device of the pulling unit. After that the winch is actuated, the tree is clamped by the grip and pulled through the cutterhead.

At the end of the operating movement, the winch drums reverse, the grip is released and the knotless,stick is automatically dropped from the girder to a stack. This done, the carriage with the grip reverse into initial position and the cycle repeats.
