I) Грамматическая  конструкция  used  to  в английском языке

- Данная конструкция обозначает события, которые происходили в прошлом и больше не имеют места быть:

When she was a child,  she used to write down each letter on the floor. Будучи ребенком, она писала буквы на полу.

- Оборот used to может использоваться не только в утвердительных, но также в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях. В этом случае он не имеет сокращений и употребляется с вспомогательным глаголом  did:

Did you use to do it? - Вы раньше это делали ?

P am didn’t use to live alone. - Пэм раньше никогда не жила одна.

 I-1) Past habits. Memories

 

Упражнение 1. Заполните пробелы в тексте, вставив конструкцию used to с подходящими словами из следующего списка:

Go   spend play    sell dance  put    stand

 

I remember the huge dance hall. Louis Armstrong a)____________ there.

 

The bar b)______________ soft drinks only. We girls c) ____________ and talk

 

in a group and we d) ___________ with each other as well. We e) _____________

Упражнение 2. Заполните пропуски в предложении, вставив конструкцию used to. Обратите внимание, что в упражнении есть вопросительные и отрицательные предложения.

 

 1) I hardly play any sports now but I ……… play football a lot when I was at college.

 

 

2) When we were little our grandmother ……… make a special almond cake for our birthday.

3) Now she is married and spends money like water, but she … spend anything when she was single.

4) (you) ……. do your homework at the last minute when you were at University?

5) When I was young I never ……… be frightened of spiders.

 

Упражнение 3. Переделайте приведенные ниже предложения, используя фразу I remember + герундий, согласно образцу:

 I used to be frightened of darkness when I was a child. – I remember being frightened of the darkness when I was a child.

 

1) She used to bring me a glass of milk in bed every night.

2) He used to take a dog for a walk every morning.

3) My mother used to eat a whole box of chocolates when she was upset about something.

4) I used to collect shells from the beach when I was little.

 

II)  READING-1: Read the texts where two people describe their earliest memories.

 

- “One of my earliest memories is from long before I was six. I went to a nursery where they used to give us cod liver oil to drink. When the children didn’t want it, they used to throw it on fire!”

- “ One of my earliest memories was playing in a tree house my parents had made for me. I used to climb up into the house and pretend I was in a castle.

 

III) SPEAKING Task: now use the Past Simple Tense, used to and the Gerund to describe  the following situations. Задание – используя в качестве примера приведенные выше тексты, выберите одну – две ситуации из Упражнения 3 и расскажите в группе, используя время Past Simple, конструкцию used to и герундий.

Упражнение 4  In groups, choose one or two of the memories and describe them:

· the clothes you had when you were eight or nine;

· your earliest memories ;

· the name of your first primary school teacher;

· your classmates in your first year at secondary school;

· one of your first holidays;

·  song or a poem you learned as a child.

Упражнение 5 Continue speaking…

· When you were a child, what were your favourite games, toys or pastimes?

· Where did you play the game and how often?

· Did you play with other people? Who?

· Is there any special food which you associate with your childhood?

· Were you a good (naughty, quiet) child?

· What sort of child were you ?- для ответа на этот вопрос можно использовать слова, приведенные в Упражнении 4

What are children like? Here are some words to help you to talk about them. Look at these words. Do you know some of them? Can you guess what the others mean? If not, look in a dictionary…
