Well done! And today we`ll learn how to enrich our vocabulary. Look and listen attentively:

Look at the pictures and translate the characteristics into Russian.

- Happy – unhappy. Can you translate? ____ Счастливый, несчастливый или несчастный.

- Formal – informal. Translate please. ____ Формальный – неформальный.

- Polite – impolite. Can you guess the meaning? ____ Вежливый – невежливый.

- Understanding – non–understanding. What about this pair? ____ Понимающий – непонимающий.

What can we say about all these 4 pairs of adjectives? They are antonyms. Это антонимы. What makes them opposite? Что же делает их противоположными?

Prefixes un–, in–, im–, and non–

Prefixes un–, in–, im– are the most frequently used negative prefixes in the English language. Это и есть самые часто употребляемые отрицательные приставки в английском языке.

Think what negative prefixes can you name in the Russian language? Какие отрицательные приставки вы знаете в русском языке? Приставки не– и ни–.

У нас есть большое количество правил, когда мы пишем не/ни раздельно либо слитно со словами, то есть они могут являться приставками, либо отрицательными частицами. In this sense English is easier. В данном смысле, в английском языке проще. We write all the prefixes together with a word. Мы пишем все приставки слитно.

Look: happy – unhappy

Kind – unkind

Prefix non– is used not so often and we mostly write with a hyphen. А вот приставка non– используется не так часто, и в большинстве случаев мы пишем ее через дефис.

Look: athletic – non–athletic

But the difficulty in the English language is that there are no rules helping us to remember what prefixes to use. Но трудность заключается в том, что в английском языке нет правил, помогающих нам запомнить какую приставку с каким словам употребить. We have to remember them or consult a dictionary if it`s possible! Мы должны их запомнить или же смотреть в словаре, если это возможно.

Now be attentive and use the needed prefix to make the sentences true. А сейчас будьте внимательны и употребите нужную отрицательную приставку, чтобы предложения стали правдивы.

Sentence number1 Sasha`s Dad is very _____ kind when Sasha`s naughty. Look at the picture. Is Sash`s Dad kind? Of course, not. What negative prefix do we use with the word kind? ____Prefix: un–. Sasha`s Dad is very unkind when Sasha`s naughty.

Sentence number2 Pasha doesn`t like sports. That`s why he looks ___ athletic in this costume. Look at Pasha. Is he athletic? Of course, he isn`t. What prefix do we need here? ___Prefix: non–. That`s why he looks non–athletic in this costume.

Sentence number3 It is ___ pleasant to get a bad mark. Is it? Do you like getting bad marks? So, what prefix is needed here? ___Prefix: un–. It is unpleasant to get a bad mark.

Sentence number4 You need a(n) ___formal costume for the party. Is the costume formal? No, it`s not formal. What prefix would you use here? ___Prefix: in–. You need an informal costume for the party.

And the last sentence: sentence number5 It`s possible to ride a whale. Look at the picture. Can you do like this? Of course we can`t ride whales. What prefix should we use? ___Prefix im–. It`s impossible to ride a whale.
