THE WORLD of BOOKS

Our world is called "The information world" today. There are а lot I ways to find necessary information. They are: books, periodicals, Internet, etc. Books are one of the most accessible. Modern lifе is impossible without the printed word. Books are various today. You can choose from science, fiction, folklore and non-fiction books. You can also read drama, роеtгу, essays, biographies, diaries, thrillers, etc. There are а lot of screen and stage adaptations of famous books. Brilliant actors actresses have appeared in films based on the classic works of literature. This practice often wins people's favour. It can add some popularity to а good book, make this book successful and famous and these adaptations can give us vivid description of аll the events in the book.

Books are very useful. They play а great role in our lives. Love for reading give those who are great readers of books an advantage over those who don' t read much. А book is one of the greatest wonders in the world, it gives us а unique chance to link up with authors who lived centuries ago or will live ш the future. We can hear their voices, thoughts and feelings. А book is а faithful and undemanding friend: it can be put aside and taken up again at any moment. Books can teach you how to reason.

But there are а lot of problems in literature today. To start with, there is а lack of good readers. The problem is an acute one, as there are а lot of people who are "Bookworms" or who read and don' t understand the author' s ideas at аll. Тhеrе are those who сап't stand reading, too.

The sad thing about the situation is that television, computers, аudio-visual instruments in general, are all gradually taking over what used to be the domain of literature. That' s why some people think that reading is а vanishing custom. They prefer to get information with the help of contemporary means.

Another big problem is а lack of good writers. There aren't а lot of genres. The language is very poor and the plot isn't fascinating at аll. А lot of contemporary authors don' t саге about their books very much.

All books are divisible into two classes: the books of the hour and the books of аll times. And it is very sad, that today there are а lot books of the hour.

What is more, thеrе is а great amount of books today but their quality is often poor.'- I think that books should be few but good. So, you see that the problems 'аге very serious. That' s why I advise you to choose an author or а book today as carefully as you choose а friend.

What about me, I like reading but 1 am not keen on literature. I prefer the real greats. Their books contain the problems similar to mine and the main character is often like me. Also, I like those books that leave something in my heart and in my soul. Such works of art stir my imagination, expand the boundaries of the familiar world and fill my life with great expectations of joy and happiness.

Reading а good book is like great adventure for me. Starting to read а book is а great thrill and I want the writer to carry me off to new, unknown рlасеs, places I’ve never been before.

So, I strongly believe, that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It is the world of mystery and romance, of wonders and adventures.

AN APPRAISAL О F А ВООК

W о rk in groups о f tw о . Не r е are two appraisals of a book. Со mpar е their organization and structure , and the way they present points.

I once read а book called "The Collector". It' s about а man whо kidnaps а girl, and she eventually dies. It' s quite а horrible story, but I liked it. Ferdinand Clegg is very inhibited with women, he doesn't know how to talk to them, so he kidnaps а girl he's seen in the town. Не keeps her in а cottage and takes her photograph. In the end she dies but he didn' t kill her. It was written by John Fowles. I liked it very much.

"The Collector" is а novel written by John Fondles. It was first published in 1963, and it is а sort of horror story. It is one of the most sinister books I have ever read. It holds you attention from the start and becomes то r е shocking as it progresses.

" Т h е Collector" is а good title. The "hero", Ferdinand Clegg, collects butterflies, but he adds to his collection the girl of his dreams, Miranda, who is an art student. w е learn enough about his background, an orphan brought up bу his aunt and uncle, to have some understanding of his behaviour.

Не is а very lonely character and painfully shy, especially with women. We see him following Miranda from а distance, fascinated by her every move.

There is а turning point when he wins some money, and his plans become а reality. Не buys а remote country cottage, captures Miranda and keeps her there just to look at her and admire. All he wants of her is to take her photograph. She is his latest and most precious "butterfly". One of th е most interesting aspects of the story is the portrayal of Miranda, as hе tries to handle the bizarre situation she finds herself in. Her behaviour goes to extremes — from trying to understand Ferdinand and be his friend to violence and trying to escape. In thе end she falls ill and dies, while he does nothing to help.
