HW: Think over the type of work you are going to do and fill in the form of work order in ex. 9 p.31
First lesson.
Good day, Ladies and Gentlemen. The task for today's lesson is to understand the difference in use of two different systems of measurement that are widely used nowadays. We'll talk about metric and imperial systems of measurement.
1. First of all study the table with explanation of new words. At the end of the lesson you may watch the table with Russian translation.
If you are interested in imperial system and would like to obtain more information about the issue, you may follow the link https://www.britannica.com/topic/Imperial-unit and read the article Imperial units | History, Measurements, & Facts | Britannica. At the end of the article is given a table with complete set of units of measurements used in Imperial system. (You can use this table in the future as a reference material if it is required.) THIS ARTICLE IS NOT OBLIGATORY. (Only for crazy). Joke.
Metric | A metric system of measurement is based on the meter and kilogram | depth | It is a distance from the surface of the object to its bottom. |
Imperial | A metric system of measurement is based on the inch and pound. | thickness | It is a distance between two sides of an object. |
Millimeter | Is a unit of measurement equal to one thousands of the meter. | acre | It’s an imperial unit of measurement for land equal to 4, 480 square yards |
Centimeter | It is a unit of measurement equal to one hundredth of meter | hectare | It is a metric unit of measurement for land, equal to 10 000 square meters |
Meter | It is a unit of measurement equal to one hundred centimeter or 39,37 inches. | Cubic inch | It is a unit of measurement for volume .It is a cube made up of one inch long sides. |
kilometer | It is a unit of measurement equal to | Cubic meter | It is a unit of measurement for volume. It is a cube made up of one meter long sides. |
inch | It is a unit of measurement equal to one twelfth of a foot or | pint | Is a unit for measuring liquid that equals 0,48 liters. |
Feet(pl) - foot | It is a unit of measurement equal to twelve inches or 30, 48 centimeters. | quart | Is a unit for measuring liquid that equals two pints. |
yard | Is a unit of measurement equals to three feet. | gallon | It is unit for measuring liquid that equals to 3, 79 litres, four quarts or eight pints. |
mile | It is a unit of measurement equal to 5, 280 feet or 1, 609 kilometers | liter | It is unit for measuring liquid that equals to one and a half quarts. |

2. Now read the text on page 28 and choose the correct answers in ex.2 p. 28.
3. Now it's time to understand the vocabulary. Do subsequently exercises 3 and 4 p. 28.
4. And at last, time for listening. Listen to the attached file and mark the statements as T or F in ex.6 p29
5. Listen to the attached audio file again and fill in the gaps in ex.7. p29.
Homework: Transfer some items from Imperial system into Metric:
60 miles per hour; 2 pints of juice; 5 yards; 3 inches; 2 gallons, 3 gallons and a quart.
Good luck!
25.12. The second lesson.
Though we are not experts in the area of measuring systems yet, it is quite logical that the next issue on the Agenda (повестка дня) is what tools are used in the oil field to perform measurements.
Traditionally start our lesson with study of the vocabulary. A table with Russian equivalents is provided just below. Please, try to understand definitions first, and only in case if you are failed, consult the second table.
level | Is a tool used to measure whether something is perfectly horizontal or perfectly vertical. A level is rectangular and contains a small tube, filled with fluid and a bubble. |
ruler | Is an object used to measure straight lines. It consist of a long, flat strip, of metal, wood or plastic, which is marked with numbers. |
Measuring tape | Is a tool used to measure distance. It consist of a long, thin strip of plastic, cloth or metal, which is marked with numbers. |
Rotameter | Is a tool used to measure the flow rate (расход) of a liquid or gas through a tube. |
caliper | A tool used to measure the diameter of an object |
inventory | Is all the things to sell in a shop or from a company. |
Burdon tube | It is a type of a gauge used for measuring pressure It consists of hollow, metal tube that is shaped into three quarters of a circle. |
Helical bourdon tube | It is a type of a bourdon tube that is shaped into a long, curving line called a helix. |
bellows | Are types of a gauge used for measuring pressure. They change shape when pressure is applied. Bellows consist of several thin layers of material stretched across the frame and separated by tubes. |
Different pressure bellows | Are a device that measures the difference between two amounts of pressure. |

level | уровень |
ruler | Линейка |
Measuring tape | рулетка |
Rotameter |
Helical bourdon tube | Винтовой манометр с трубкой Бурдона |
bellows | сильфоны |
Differential pressure bellows | Сильфонный дифманометр |
