THE BORDER, MARCH, 1952
An armed guard in gray, a church, a wild rocky coast on which rushes a steel sea. Black rocks, cliffs, wind, a cold spring sun. Fragile, feathery fruit trees in pink. At Portbou, leave the train. A large room, like a drafty baggage depot. I wait; my luggage is wrenched open and inspected by insolent guards. Organized disorder. Luggage is chalked. People drift to the currency exchange to declare what they are bringing in. I am bringing in so little (twelve thousand lire) that I expect them to think I am hiding more. We are funnelled into a doorway between filthy guards to show our passports. I am caught between a quarrelling French couple. Evidently bringing the baby was her idea—he knew better from the start. A wait, a long one. Inexplicable multilingual confusion, lending of pens, filling out of forms. I reach the window. “Journalist?” says the arrogant young man. (Will they all be like this?) “Beautiful, too!” I know what I must look like after a night and a day and a night in a third-class train. On to another window, where something is stamped, and a rush to the Barcelona train. They seem old (the carriages) but not shabby, just high and rather solid. No compartment doors, thank God, as I have been suffocating since Sicily. I share the window with a young girl who wears the Saint-Germain-des-Prés uniform—plaid slacks, black shirt, peajacket, mascara, no lipstick. Holes in her socks (the heel is a great grubby-white moon) and she obviously doesn’t give a damn. She has two addresses for cheap rooms in Barcelona and Madrid and writes a note for one, Calle de Hortaleza 7, Madrid. The carriage fills: an old woman, who can hardly hide her loathing for Miss Saint-Germain; two businessmen, who gravely offer each other smoking tobacco and papers for rolling; a booted soldier, fat blond wife, two babies. Everyone sleeps. The soldier wakes up and says to one of the babies, who is crying, “Si tú no te callas, te tiras por la ventana,” which I immediately write down, as it is the first sentence in Spanish I have heard and miraculously understood, though if he had not pointed to the window I might not have known about ventana.

Trigger safety device for guns
The present invention relates to a safety me charisma for a gun, more particularly, to a slidable locking bar which lockingly engages the trigger and is released from locking engagement by the hand of the firer being placed in the firing position, the locking bar being automatically returned to the locking position when the hand of the firer is removed.

It is, therefore, the principal object of this invention to provide an improved and simplified safety mechanism for every type of gun which is fired by a trigger.
It is another object of this invention to provide a safety mechanism which is unlocked by the firer’s hand being placed in the firing position and automatically locks the gun against firing when the hand of the firer is removed from the firing position.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a safety mechanism on the under-side of the gun stock and adjacent the trigger guard, but which is not unlocked merely by the weight of the gun when it is carried in the firer’s hand.
It is an additional object of this invention to provide a safety locking bar which engages the trigger to lock the same against firing and which automatically returns to the locking position after the gun has been fired.

The advantages of this invention will become apparent from a description of the operation of the locking bar or slide which constitutes the safety mechanism. When the gun is carried in one hand, as is commonly done, the gun is generally supported at a point immediately behind the trigger guard, by the firer’s hand, and rests in the curled fingers thereof. The weight of the gun upon the firer’s hand when in this position will not move the locking bar since a rearward sliding motion of the bar is necessary in order to unlock the trigger. Consequently this is a true safety mechanism since it will be released only when the gun is held in firing position. When the gun is raised to the firing position, the firer inserts his finger in the trigger guard forwardly of the trigger, and the reminder of the fingers of his hand wrap around the stock behind the trigger guard.

Trumps Anti-Umweltpolitik – ein Schock für Greta Thunberg
Die Umweltaktivistin Greta Thunberg hat am Mittwoch die USA erreicht – just als der Präsident in Erwägung zieht, Regenwald in Alaska zur Abholzung freizugeben. Das wäre eine von vielen Rücknahmen im Umweltschutz durch Donald Trump.
Greta Thunberg dürfte nach ihrer Ankunft in New York vergleichsweise glücklich über Europas Umgang mit dem Klimawandel sein. Denn die Umweltpolitik von Präsident Donald Trump zeichnet sich vor allem durch die Worte „Rücknahme“ und „Lockerung“ aus.
Bereits 83 Klimaschutzmaßnahmen der Vorgängerregierungen hat er zurückgenommen, zählen Forscher der Harvard Law School und der Columbia Law School seit dem Amtsantritt des Präsidenten. Nicht alle konnten allerdings vor Gerichten bestehen. Aber gerade im Bereich Luftschutz und Emissionsbegrenzung wurden viele Maßnahmen gestoppt.
Just wenige Stunden vor Thunbergs Ankunft in den USA meldete die „Washington Post“ jetzt, dass der US-Präsident seinen Landwirtschaftsminister angewiesen habe, 9,5 Millionen Hektar im Tongass National Forest, dem gemäßigten Regenwald Alaskas, vom Abholzungsverbot auszunehmen.
Eine schockierende Nachricht für Umweltschützer, besonders angesichts der vielen Hektar Wald, die zurzeit in Brasilien und Bolivien verbrennen. Für Präsident Trump wäre das wohl nur eine weitere Rücknahme von Schutzmaßnahmen. Das sind einige der einschneidendsten Schritte seiner Umweltpolitik:
Im Wahlkampf hat Trump nie ein Geheimnis daraus gemacht, dass er bereit ist, den Klima- und Umweltschutz zurückzudrehen, um die Wirtschaft in Schwung zu bringen. Er versprach den Arbeitern in der einbrechenden Kohleindustrie Jobs und machte Umweltschutzmaßnahmen für die explodierende Zahl arbeitsloser Minenarbeiter verantwortlich.

Mit der Ernennung von Scott Pruitt zum Umweltminister im Februar 2017 setzte er einen Mann an die Spitze der amerikanischen Umweltschutzbehörde (EPA), der schon Erfahrung darin hatte, gegen Umweltschutzbestimmungen vorzugehen.
Pruitt hatte sich in seiner früheren Position als Generalstaatsanwalt des Bundesstaats Oklahoma, ein Zentrum der amerikanischen Erdöl- und Erdgasförderung, selbst mit der EPA angelegt. Er klagte unter anderem für höhere Grenzwerte bei der Luftverschmutzung in Nationalparks und der Wasserbelastung mit Quecksilber und Arsen durch Kraftwerke.
Er erklärte sogar das Kleine Präriehuhn zum Feind, dessen Schutzstatus er aufheben wollte, da es den Gasbohrungen in seinem Bundesstaat im Wege sei. Beim Thema Klimawandel ist Pruitt mit Trump absolut einer Meinung.
