Description of the glory of Yadu Vamsa



Siita said, “Vajravan was a famous son bom to Krostu. He had a son named Santi who had a son named Kus'ika.

Citraratha was the valorous son of Kus'ika. The son of Citraratha was known as Sasabindu in the world.

Prthuyas'as was his son, who was quite a religious one. The name of his son was Prthukarman, who had a son named Prthujaya.

He had a son named PrthukTrti, who had a son named Prthudana. Prthusravas was the son of Prthudana and Prthusattama was bom as a son to the Prthusravas.

Prthusattama had a son named Usanas, who had a son named Satesu. Rulunakavaca was born to him as his son. His son was known as Paravrtta.

Paravrtta had a son named Yamagha who was quite popular in the world. A son named Vidarbha was bom to him. Vidarbha had the sons named Kratha and Kausika.

Lomapada was the name of his third son. His son became the king Babhru. The name of his son was Dhrti, and Dhrti had a son named Sveta.

The valorous Visvasaha was the son of Sveta. His son Kaus'ika of great virility is known for his prowess.

The intelligent Sumanta was his son and Anala was born to him as his son. Sveni was the son of Anala, who produced many sons.

Dyutiman was the foremost of them. Vapusman was the son of Dyutiman, while Vapusman had a son named Brhanmedhas. Srldeva happened to be his son.

О Brahmanas, the son of Srldeva was devoted to Shiva and extremely valorous, known by the name of Vltaratha. Kunti was the son of Kratha and Vrsni was born to Kunti.

An extremely valorous son named Navaratha was bom to him. Once he went out for hunting and he had an encounter with a terrific demon.

О Best of the sages, the king getting terrified tried to flee from the place. But the enraged and powerful demon followed him.

The invincible demon known as Duryodhana, looked like the burning flames, issuing lustre and holding a trident in his hand. Looking at him, the king Navaratha spotted a temple of the goddess Sarasvatl, from a distance which happened to be quite a safe place. The intelligent king reached there while running.

There he had an audience with the goddess Sarasvatl, he bowed in reverence to her. The king, the conqueror of the enemies, offered prayer to the goddess with folded hands.

He prostrated himself on the ground and said, “O Goddess, I take refuge with you. I offer my salutation to the goddess Sarasvatl.

You are the goddess of speech, beyond the beginning or the end, you are Isvaii, BrahmacarinI, the place of the origin of the world, Yogini, the supreme form of death, I offer my salutation to you.

You were bom of Brahma, having three eyes, with the crescent lodged over the head. You are the form of Cit, the very embodiment of the Brahman itself.

О Parames'vari, you protect me, since, I am frightened and have taken refuge in you.” In the meantime, the enraged Rdksasa also arrived there for the killing of the king, in the holy shrine of Sarasvatl, filled with arrogance and holding a trident in his hand.

Then Sarasvatl, the mother of the universe, had her abode like the sun and the moon. In the meantime, a great spirit resembling the sun at the end of Yugas, pierced the Raksasa.

Не attacked at the chest of the Raksasa with his trident, felling him on the ground. Then he spoke to the king. “O King you better leave this place, because you should stay here no more.

You should atonce become fearless. The Raksasa has been killed here.” О Best of the Brahmanas, thereafter, the king Navaratha, feeling extremely pleased, offering his salutation to the goddess, retired to his city which resembled Indrapurl. Reaching there, he consecrated the image of goddess Sarasvatl there with utmost devotion.

Не adored the goddess Sarasvatl, performing various yajnas, and the homas. The extremely religious Dasaratha was the son of Navaratha. He was also devoted to the goddess and was quite illustrious. Sakuni was his son, to whom a son named Karambha was bom. Devarata was the son of Karambha.

 Devarata perfonned the Asvamedha sacrifice. A son named Devaksatra was born to him. Madhu was the son of Devakasatra, while Kuru was bom to Madhu.

 Kuru had two sons, known as Sumatra and Anu. Priyagotra was the son of Anu, and Amsu was born as son to him.

 Andhaka was the glorious son of Ams'u, who was devoted to Visnu. He was a noble soul, engaged in charitable gifts and the best among those having the knowledge of archery.

 He remained devoted to Vasudeva, at the advice of Narada. He composed sacred scripture listened to by Kunda (son bom of an adulterous woman) and Gola (widow’s son).

 The Sastras well known after his name, auspicious to Satvatas and conducive to the welfare of Kunda and others has been still current.

Satvata was the son of Andhaka, who was well-versed in all the sastras. The king with the meritorious reputation, also founded the sacred lore.

Kausalya his wife, produced powerful sons known as Satvatas, endowed with Sattvaguna, and were known by the names of Andhaka, Mahabhoja, Vrsni and king Devavrdha and Bhajamana. Bhajamana was the eldest of all, who was the best in the art of archery. Out of these brothers, the king Devavrdha, performed severe tapas.

He prayed to the lord to have a son possessing all the virtues. His son came to be known as Babhru, who possessed the auspicious glory and was the sovereign ruler over all.

Babhru was quite a religious-minded one, besides being beautiftil, and was always engaged in the knowledge of the Truth. Bhajamana produced the sons who possessed enormous riches and were known as Bhajamanas.

Two of his sons were quite prominent who were known as Nimi and Krkana. In the dynasty of Mahabhoja, Bhojas and Vaimatrkas were bom.

Sumitra, Anamitra and Timi were the sons of Vrsni. Nighna was bom as son to Anamitra. Nighna had two sons.

One of them was highly fortunate Prasena, and the other was excellent Satrajit. Sini was the youngest son bom of Anamitra, the son of Vrsni.

Satyaka was the name of his son, who because of his tmthful nature was known as Satyasampanna. Yuyudhana was the son of Satyaka, while Asanga was the son of Yuyudhana.

The intelligent Kuni was the son of Asanga. While Yugandhara was the son of Kuni. Vrsni II was bom of Madri by Yadu.

Vrsni had two sons, known as Svaphalka and Citraka. Svaphalka married the daughter of the king of KasI as his wife.

A religious-minded son named Akrura was bom of her. She had other sons named Upamangu, Mangu and several others.

Akriira’a son was well known as Devavan and the divine-souled Upadeva who had sons called Vis'va and Pramathin.

The sons of Citraka were known as Prthu,Viprthu, Asvagrlva, Subahu, Sudhasvaka and Gaveksaka.

He begot of the daughter of Andhaka, four sons, viz. Kukura, Bhajamana, Samlka and Balagarvita.

О Kukura’s son was Vrsni, and Kapotaroman was the son of Vrsni. Vilomaka was his son.

Tama was the intelligent son of Vilomaka, who was the friend of Gandharva Tumburu. Similarly, Anakadundubhi was the son of Tama.

Не performed great penance over the peak of the Govardhana mountain. Lord Brahma, the lord of the universe bestowed a boon on him, for the expansion of his race, glory and the best of jnartayoga. О Brahmanas, he also achieved the boon that he could have power greater than the preceptor Brhaspati, and the changing of his own form at will.

After securing boon from that excellent deity, he propitiated with music unagitatedly with a composed, concentrated mind the bull-bannered deity, Lord Shiva, adored by Devas. To him who was engaged in music, Lord Shiva, the consort of Parvati, gave the jewel of a girl inaccessible even to Devas.

The king, killer of the enemies, united with her, trained his beloved wife of tremulous eye, the excellent art of music.

In union with his wife, he produced a splendid son named Subhuja and a charming daughter known as Hrlmatl.

The mother then trained her son and the daughter, during the childhood itself, the art of music and singing.

The child Subhuja, after his thread ceremony studied the Vedas appropriately from his preceptor, and married the mind-born daughter ManasI of the Gandharvas.

She produced five excellent sons from Subhuja. All of them, were well-versed in the playing of Vina, knowing all the related secrets. They were experts in the science of music.

The king who was well-versed in the art of music, used to adore Shiva-the destroyer of Tripuras, together with his sons, wife and the grandsons.

A Gandharva named Subahu took Hr-Imatl who was beautiful in all limbs, with large eyes like Lakshmi, to his city,

She also produced the sons of Gandharva who were quite illustrious and were known by the names of Susena, Dhlra, Sugriva, Subhoja and Naravahana.

Thereafter, Candanodakadundubhi got a son named Abhijit, who had a son named Punarvasu. He had a son named Ahuka.

О Best of the Brahmanas, Ahuka had two sons, known as Ugrasena and Devaka. Out of them, Devaka produced many sons resembling the gods and were quite powerful.

They were known by the names of Devavan, Upadeva, Sudeva, and Devaraksita. They had seven sisters, known as Dhrtadeva, Upadeva, Devaraksita, Srldeva, Santideva, Sahadeva of holy rites and Devaki. DevakI, of beautiful waist, was the best among them, who had been married to Vasudeva.1 The sons of Ugrasena were known as Nyagrodha, Karnsa, Subhumi, Rastrapala, Tustiman and Sanku. The well- known son Vidtiratha was bom of Bhajamana.

Viduratha had a son named Surasama, and his son was known as Pratiksatra. Svayambhoja was the son of Pratiksatra and Dhatrlka was his son, who could subjugate his enemies.

1. Vasudeva had two wives Devaki and Rohini. Baladeva was, transferred from the womb of the former to that of the latter and therefore he was called Satikarsana.

Krtavarma was the son of Dhatrika. Krtavarma had a son named Surasena. Vasudeva was the son of Surasena, who was engaged in religious rites.

The powerful-armed Vasudeva, the preceptor of the universe, was bom of Vasudeva. At the prayer of the gods, lord Visnu, became the son of Devaki.

The other beautiful wife of Vasudeva, known as the virtuous Rohini, produced Satikarsana, the eldest son known as Rama, the carrier of a plough as his special weapon.

The one who has been called as Vasudeva, the son of Vasudeva, had been the lord of the universe, while Balarama, the carrier of the plough, was the incarnation of serpent Sesa.

In fact on the pretext of the curse of Bhrgu, Visnu accepted the human body and incarnated as Krisna from the womb of Devaki and Balarama from the womb of Rohini.

Similarly at the command of Vasudeva, KausikI, the Yogic-slumber, emerged out of the body of Uma and was bom as the daughter of Yas'oda.

О Best of the sages, the other sons of Vasudeva and the elder brothers of Krisna, had been killed by Kamsa earlier.

Vasudeva had also the sons named Susena, Dayin, Bhadrasena, Mahabala, Vajradambha, Bhadrasena, and adorable Klrtiman.

When all of them had been killed, RohinI gave birth to Halayudha Balabhadra, the lord of the worlds.

After the birth of Balarama, Krisna, Acyuta, the first among Devas, was bom from the womb of DevakI with a Srivatsa mark over the chest.

The virtuous Revatl was married to Balarama, who gave birth to two sons named Nis'ita and Ulmuka.

Lord Krisna, the performer of the noble tasks, had sixteen thousand wives, and hundreds and thousands of sons were bom to them.

The prominent among them were Camdesna, Sucaru, Caruvesa, Yasodhara, Camsravas, Camyasas, Pradyumna and Samba. All of them were bom from RukminI, as sons of Krisna. They were quite strong besides being foremost of all.

Observing the valorous sons of Krisna from RukminI, Jambavatl of smiling face, said to Krisna.

She said, “O Lotus-eyed one, О Killer of demons, you also bestow a son on me who should be excellent and resemble Indra in prowess.”

Listening to the words of Jambavatl, Hari, the God, who subjugated his enemies, a storehouse of penance, started performing tapas himself.

О Rishis, then Krisna, the son of DevakI, performed severe austerities, and had an audience with Shiva, and got the son. You listen to the relevant story.
