Classes of Roads

There are three classes of roads: highways, expressways and usual roads. They are distinguished according to the conditions of movement and access of vehicles.

Highways have the following features. They have a multiline traffic area with a central disjunctive line. They have no intersections of all types of transport and pedestrian roads on one level.

Highways have access just through intersection in different levels which are put in distance equal to 5 km from each other. The maximum speed is usually 110 km per hour. In Austria such speed is equal to 130 km and in Switzerland it is equal to 120 km.

Expressways are rather similar to highways. The exception is that the access in different levels and adjunction in one level are put not often than in 3 km from each other. Usual roads have a single traffic area or have a central disjunctive line.

The access in different levels and adjunction in one level are put not often than in 600 meters (categories IB, II, III), 100 meters (category IV), 50 meters (category V) from each other.

Roads in Japan

Japan's large metropolitan areas around Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya are served by highly efficient public transportation systems. Consequently, many residents do not own a car or even a driver's license. Outside the big cities, however, public transportation tends to be inconvenient, and most people rely on a car.

In Japan, cars are driven on the left side of the road and have the driver's seat and steering wheel on their right side. The legal minimum age for driving is 18 years. Road signs and rules follow international standards, and most signs on major roads are in Japanese and English. Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited.

The typical speed limits are 80 to 100 km/h on expressways, 40 km/h in urban areas, 30 km/h in side streets and 50 to 60 km/h elsewhere. Drivers usually exceed the speed limits by about 10 km/h. Most roads in Japan are toll free with the exception of expressways and some scenic driving routes. Road conditions tend to be good, although side streets in the cities can be rather narrow. Traffic congestion is a frequent problem in and around urban centers.

Russian Roads

Russian roads are divided into three main groups. The first group of roads is called the federal roads or national ones. The group consists of principal roads radiating from the capital of Russia, Moscow to far parts of the country and to most important cities of the Russian Federation. These roads are ruled by the Federal Ministry of Transport. They are constructed with two carriage-ways for the organization of movement in both directions. They have a different number which is marked on the signpost along the road. The road M11 extends from Moscow to Saint-Petersburg. Each driver can control his route finding the numbers on a map

The second group of roads is called the regional roads. This group consists of little less important roads than the federal ones. The Russian Federation includes 89 regions with own central cities. The regional roads are radiating from these cities to smaller cities and towns of the region. They form a considerable road network in Russia. These roads are controlled and maintained by regional authorities. The third group is called the local or municipal roads. These roads connect villages and settlements in districts of the region. They are usually designed with two carriage-ways and are administered by local authorities.

Roads in the United Kingdom

Roads in the United Kingdom form a network of varied quality and capacity. Road distances are shown in miles or yards and UK speed limits are in miles per hour (mph) or use of the national speed limit (NSL) symbol. Some vehicle categories have various lower maximum limits enforced by speed limiters. Enforcement of UK road speed limits increasingly uses speed guns, automated in-vehicle systems and automated roadside traffic cameras.

The earliest specifically engineered roads were built during the British Iron Age. The road network was expanded during the Roman occupation. Some of these survive and others were lost. New roads were added in the mediæval period and from the 17th century onwards. Whilst control has been transferred from local to central bodies and back again, currently management and development of the road network is shared between local authorities, the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Highways Agency. Certain aspects of the legal framework remain under the competence of the United Kingdom parliament.

Although some roads have much older origins, the network was subject to major development from the 1950s to the mid-1990s. From then, construction of roads has become increasingly controversial with direct action campaigns by environmentalists in opposition.

Roman Roads

Primarily, the roads were for military use, allowing troops to be quickly moved to where they were most needed. However, they also allowed the movement of people and goods, and the Roman highways connected isolated communities, helping them to absorb new ideas and influences, sell surplus goods, and buy what they could not produce locally.

This trade resulted in an increase of wealth for everyone and is one of the reasons why many subjugated people soon saw themselves as Roman, eagerly adopting the lifestyle of their conquerors. The Roman roads were a truly amazing piece of engineering, acting as a poignant and enduring legacy for the engineers who designed these marvels.

The Roman surveyors were highly skilled professionals, able to use a number of tools, instruments, and techniques to plan the courses for roads and aqueducts, and lay the groundwork for towns, forts and large buildings.

The Romans preferred to build straight roads wherever possible and relied upon their surveyors to chart the route of their great highways. In most cases, the military would be responsible for plotting the route of new roads, but civil surveyors were used to survey courses for aqueducts, settle boundary disputes, and prepare the groundwork for buildings.
