Your British friend wants to become a journalist. What questions will you ask him/her?

Are you a creative person?

How often do you feel writing about up to date issues?

Do you like watching news bulletins?

What kind of news are you interested in?

What mass media means do use to collect data for your reports?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of mass media?

Give me a piece of advice on how to decide if the information on the Internet is reliable or not.

Before using information you find on the internet for assignments and research, it is important to judge its accuracy and to establish that the information comes from a reliable and appropriate source.

You should ask yourself   who the website’s intended audience is and if  it is relevant for your assignment or research. You should try to identify the author and decide if you can call him an expert in this field.

If the information is part of a journal or other online publication, you should try to establish the authority of that publication.

The information should be well-written and grammatically correct. The bibliography should be included. If the author presents objective arguments and explores other points of view is another proof that the information can be relied on. You should also consider if the information is up to date. A good website will show when it was ‘last updated’ or give a clear indication of the timeliness of the information.

All these tips will be useful to realize whether the information on the Internet is reliable or not.

Parents think that the internet influences negatively the development of teenagers'     thinking skills. Children, on the contrary, believe that it's impossible to imagine our modern world without the internet. What is your point of view?

I disagree with parents’ point of view on the role of the Internet. The Internet is a great source of information and entertainment. There is more information on the Internet than in the world’s biggest library. The Internet is the door to the world. By visiting a webpage, searching Google we can learn something new, get in touch with a friend or add to a discussion. The next advantage I want to mention is faster development. Many universities and research institutions are also linked. They are able to exchange experiences, novelties and often they start new projects together. If they are linked, they can save time and money. What will happen, if you are ill and cannot leave the house? No problem! You can do everything on the internet without leaving the house. You can do the shopping, meet friends and so on. The only problem is the way of paying. It is very easy, you only have to type in your credit card-number and the goods will be paid. Another advantage of the internet is that you can join a community. You can create new social contacts all over the world, which you could not do so easy without the internet.     Furthermore you can hold video conferences which means that your teacher is sitting in his office in America and teaching you in Austria. Moreover you can read the daily newspapers from all over the world, sometimes for free. You do not have to buy them anymore. The internet is a database full of information and offers us a lot of services, sometimes for free. This makes our life easier and sometimes also cheaper. All in all I think that the internet is very useful especially for students.

What are your favorite newspapers, radio channels, TV programmes, websites?

My favorite newspapers, radio channels, TV programmes, websites are quite numerous. I’m fond of reading newspapers Belarus Segodnya and Respublika, local editions of major Russian newspapers Komsomolskaya Pravda and Argumenty and Fakty which are very popular in Belarus. Printed press is available mainly in the Belarusian and Russian languages, though there are some newspapers in English, Polish, Ukrainian and German. The popular papers or tabloids give information large in amount but poor in quality. They include news, reports in brief, interviews with celebrities, sensaitional stories and lots of advertise. Among them: speedinfo, Megapolis, Cosmopolitan, Liza and so on. There are also special magazines for sports fans, motorists, women and others.
As for my family we have different tastes in reading. My father likes reading “Driver”, Mum enjoys “ Gala Biography» . As for me I read magazines for teenagers such as Oops or magazines about animals. But my favourite magazine is “Friend». It’s a monthly publication. I don’t like to subscribe to it, I prefer to buy single issues.

There are around 30 FM radio stations in Belarus. My favorite are: Radius FM, Radio Unistar (Belarusian-German media project), Europe plus and others. My favourite radio station is “Europe plus». I usually listen to it while I am doing my homework. I think you can find any radio station to your taste. And would you like to listen to the song which is often sung on “Europe plus».

There are national TV broadcasters in Belarus: Belarus 1 TV Channel, Belarus 2 (foryouth audience), Belarus 3 (social and cultural), Belarus 5 (sport), National Television (ONT), Capital city television (STV) which my family and watch every evening. I’m also interested in international channels, including Euronews, BBC, Eurosport which are broadcast via cable TV in Belarus as I can practise my English as well. There are lots of intellectual TV programs nowadays, they are my favourites. I like “What? Where? When?, I try to answer interesting questions, and “Details” with Tina Kandelaki.

I use the Internet every day for various purposes: I chat with friends all over the world, read news and browse the Net to find necessary information for my studies. E-mail has become the greatest way of communication, the letter will be delivered in a few seconds. I also like social media sites, like Facebook or Vkontakte. I have my profiles there and they help me stay in touch with all my friends both from Belarus and abroad.
Surely, there are advantages and disadvantages of mass media. Some of the advantages are education and entertainment. The main disadvantage is that sometimes the information which is provided on the Internet is unreliable and may even be harmful to people.
In spite of all disadvantages, people still read newspapers, watch TV, listen to the radio and browse the Net.
