Marketing in Japan

1. Introduction

Japan now has one of the highest gross national products in the world and a per capita income.

2. Import regulations

Import duties have been reduced, but are levied on almost all manufactured goods. Commodity taxes are also payable on some items, but these are applied also to locally produced products.

3. Market research

Japan has received more attention from export-promotion organizations than perhaps almost any other country. There is an immense amount of reliable information available on the market, most of it rapidly obtainable in the UK. The Japan External Trade Organization, with an office in London, is a valuable source of published information on the Japanese economy and on Specific Market Sectors.

Market research studies can be undertaken by a number of UK companies with a subsidiary in Japan.

4. Department stores

The department store has been described as part of the Japanese way of life. Such stores are leisure, cultural and entertainment centers as well as a most important outlet for quality goods of all kinds. With supermarkets, they account for some 70 per cent of the sales of the imported consumer goods.

5. Self-service stores

Self-service stores, especially the large supermarket groups, represent the most significant change in Japanese retailing over the last fifteen years. Their total sales have overtaken those of the department-stores. Food and drink predominate, but most self-service stores sell wide range of household goods and hardware as well, and some offer clothing and furniture. Self-service stores offer an important outlet for imported food and drink, though imported goods so far represent only about 1 per cent of total sales.
